A few simple checks for a tidy display.

Measure before ordering

Check the item dimensions and the space available. For a group of prints or signs, plan the spacing before making holes in the wall.

Read the mounting guidance

Frames, hangers and fixings may be sold separately. Use fixings suitable for the wall and the weight of the item, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Think about the room

Materials and finishes can look different in natural and artificial light. Consider existing colours and how the item will fit with the rest of the collection.

Protect delicate items

Keep paper items and delicate collectibles away from damp conditions and strong direct sunlight. Follow any care guidance supplied with the item.

Create a collection record before the arrangement

For each object, note its dimensions, materials, condition and any maker’s care guidance. Separate photographs, paper documents, models and signs; they may need different handling and supports. A decorative mounting plan should not be treated as conservation advice for a valuable or fragile original. Seek suitable professional advice before cleaning or fixing an item whose condition you do not understand.

Make paper templates for the footprints of frames and display cases. Try the arrangement with doors open and the room in normal use. Leave enough clearance to remove objects without catching neighbouring pieces. Check a case’s internal dimensions as well as its outside size; a model, support base and open door can require more space than the scale label suggests.

Make the story readable

A small label can record the operator, approximate date and what is known about an object. Distinguish confirmed information from a family memory or an uncertain identification. Keep a photograph of the arrangement and a separate inventory so moving the display does not erase its context. Choose fixings through the product instructions and the actual wall or shelf requirements; this guide cannot specify a safe installation.
